Research is broadly categorised into two types: basic and applied.

  • Basic research, also known as fundamental or pure research, seeks to advance theoretical knowledge and understanding without immediate concern for practical applications. It is driven by intellectual curiosity and the desire to understand fundamental principles governing natural and social phenomena. It focuses on "knowledge for its own sake" and is primarily driven by curiosity and the need to explore the unknown. Basic research occurs in a controlled environment and is considered universal knowledge, meaning its findings are broadly relevant across disciplines.

  • Applied research, on the other hand, is designed to focus on providing practical solutions to specific problems. In many cases, it is a follow-up to basic research because it further investigates the outcomes of pure or basic research in order to validate findings and apply them to create innovative solutions. There are three main types of applied research: action research, which helps find practical solutions to problems; evaluation research, which analyses existing information to support informed decision-making; and research and development, which focuses on creating new products or services.

It is worth noting that while applied research is more experimental or confirmatory in nature, basic research tends to be exploratory or explanatory. Both types may use similar methods — such as interviews or inductive reasoning — but they differ in scope and objectives.

Academic research is generally carried out using the scientific methodology — a structured, step-by-step framework for investigation. The key steps include: asking a question based on observation, conducting background research, constructing a hypothesis, experimenting to test the hypothesis, analysing the data from the experiment and drawing conclusions, and communicating the results to others. In a typical application, a researcher develops a hypothesis, tests it through various means, and then modifies the hypothesis on the basis of the outcome. The scientific method is not a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach; it is a flexible framework that can be adapted to suit different research questions and methodologies across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
